Adoption

Adoption is a legal process that permanently transfers parental rights and responsibilities from a child’s birth parents to their adoptive parents. Once the adoption is finalised, adoptive parents have the same legal status as biological parents under the Family Law Act 1975, and adopted children have the same rights as biological children.

Importantly, adoption also means that the birth parents no longer hold any legal rights or responsibilities for the child.

Legal Assistance

It is important to know that private adoption arrangements are not legal in Queensland. All adoptions must be managed through the appropriate government department to ensure the legal rights and welfare of everyone involved—particularly the child. If you’re thinking about adoption—whether as a prospective adoptive parent or as someone considering adoption for your child—it’s natural to feel uncertain about where to start. The process can be complex and emotionally challenging, but you don’t have to navigate it alone.

We provide legal assistance and support for adoptions in Queensland and New South Wales.
