Consulting, Education and Advocacy

There is no doubt that the law surrounding family creation through surrogacy, donor conception, and, in some cases, IVF has not kept pace with modern reproductive practices. However, it is not only intended parents who seek clarity and guidance in these areas. Medical professionals, psychologists, and individuals supporting loved ones through their family-building journeys also often require accurate information and expert advice to navigate these complex legal and emotional landscapes.

We offer educational seminars tailored for medical professionals, allied health practitioners, and individuals supporting loved ones through assisted family creation. These seminars provide clear, up-to-date information on the legal aspects of surrogacy, donor conception, and related reproductive pathways, enabling participants to confidently support their patients, clients, or family members throughout their journey.

When Katie and Sally embarked on their surrogacy journey, they had a little joke – if they had a dollar for every time someone asked if surrogacy was even legal – they would have paid for their whole surrogacy journey four times over!

Unfortunately, for many individuals and professionals not directly involved in assisted reproductive processes, the legal and procedural aspects of family creation through surrogacy or donor conception can be unfamiliar and challenging to navigate.

Katie and Sally encountered firsthand the gaps in knowledge and outdated—or at times entirely absent—policies within government departments and fertility clinics. Information was often fragmented, leading to delays, errors, and repeated processes due to inaccurate guidance.

Their experience, including the complexities of something as seemingly simple as applying for a passport for Vinnie, highlights the need for clearer pathways and better-informed support systems. (You can read more about this experience in our blog here.)

In response, Katie has developed comprehensive educational programs and delivers seminars for medical professionals, clinic staff, and allied health providers. These sessions are designed to clarify the legal landscape of surrogacy—which varies between states—and donor conception, ensuring that practitioners are equipped to provide informed, empathetic support to individuals and families on their journey.

Advocacy for change

Katie and Sally are in the process of writing papers to help advocate for change to surrogacy laws in Australia.

They propose to make a submission (when appropriate) to the Australian Law Reform Commission during the process of its review of surrogacy laws and have made submissions to members in Queensland about law reform.
